Project Coordinator - Sustainable China                                               Lawrence University Fall 2016
  • Lawrence University “Sustainable China” tour of Shanghai, Wuxi, Guiyang and Hong Kong 
  • Three-week ‘traveling classroom’ examining sustainability, culture, and commerce in China
  • Established, maintained correspondence in Mandarin via phone and email to arrange group hotel accommodations for trip to Shanghai, Wuxi, Guiyang, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong
  • Assisted students without Chinese language skills during travel
  • Designed and developed new webpage for Sustainable China program
 
Ethnographic Research- Henry Luce Foundation Grant                       Guizhou, China Summer 2015
  • Designed, executed 6-week ethnographic field research focused on minority women batik artisans and their attitudes towards their changing craft. Created, presented final ethnography
  • Completed National Institutes of Health (NIH) research ethics course ‘Protecting Human Research Participants’.  Met Institutional Review Board (IRB) ethical standards
  • Designed surveys. Conducted and translated interviews for statistical and qualitative analysis
  • Researched and analyzed outside secondary sources as preparation
  • Coordinated logistics (flights, local transport, scheduling interviews) to collect research data
  • Traveled to field sites in Guizhou, China: Cultural Minority Heritage Expo, universities, co-ops, artisan workshops and small businesses to carry out self-designed surveys and interviews

  • Deeper understanding of Chinese culture via exploration, language acquisition, strong personal connections with native Mandarin speakers. Observed Mandarin-only language pledge
  • In Mandarin, researched & designed independent research project on young women's attitudes toward marriage. Wrote research paper (in Mandarin) on findings.
